The short answer, and it is not the one a shop is supposed to give. Windshield protection film runs roughly $700 to $1,400 installed in Boca Raton, and for a lot of Florida drivers the pure dollar math does not work. Florida law bans deductibles on windshield claims, so if you carry comprehensive coverage, a replacement is already free. WPF earns its money for a narrower group: drivers protecting factory glass on an ADAS-equipped car, drivers without comprehensive coverage, and drivers who would rather not hand their car over for calibration twice a year.
What windshield protection film actually is
WPF is a clear, thin laminate bonded to the outside of your glass. It is not the same product as paint protection film. Body PPF is 8 mil urethane optimized to conform to curves. Windshield film is built for optical clarity first, because anything you look through has to be distortion-free. ExoShield's current GT3+ product is about 5 mil and layered: a nano-composite hardcoat on top, a flexible shock-absorbing substrate in the middle, an ultra-clear adhesive underneath.
The mechanism is energy absorption, not armor. A rock strike that would concentrate force on a single point of glass instead gets spread across the flexible layer and dissipated. ExoShield publishes a claim of roughly 6 times the impact resistance of bare glass, and the film rejects around 99.9 percent of UV.
One thing to clear up immediately: ceramic window tint does not do this. Tint rejects heat and UV, and on a windshield it is legally limited anyway. It has no meaningful impact resistance. If you want heat rejection, that is ceramic window tint. Chip resistance is WPF. Different products, different problems, and you can run both.
What windshield replacement actually costs in Palm Beach County
This is where the decision lives. There is no single number, and any shop quoting you one is guessing.
What moves you across that spread: OEM versus aftermarket glass, a forward camera behind the mirror, a heads-up display or acoustic laminated glass, and rain sensor configuration. A Model 3 and a fifteen-year-old Camry are not in the same conversation.
- Aftermarket glass on an older car with no camera: roughly $250 to $600 installed.
- Aftermarket glass with ADAS recalibration: roughly $600 to $1,200. Calibration alone typically runs $150 to $600 depending on whether it is static (targets in a controlled bay), dynamic (a road test at set speeds with a scan tool), or both.
- OEM glass with calibration on a Tesla, BMW, or Mercedes: roughly $1,200 to $2,500, and a Model Y with genuine Tesla glass sits toward the top of that.
The Florida rule almost nobody factors in
Florida Statute 627.7288 states that the deductible provisions of a motor vehicle policy providing comprehensive coverage or combined additional coverage "shall not be applicable to damage to the windshield." You can read it at the Florida Senate's statute page.
In plain English: if you carry comprehensive coverage in Florida, your windshield gets repaired or replaced with no deductible. Not a low deductible. Zero. That is an unusual consumer protection and it changes the WPF math more than any product spec does. If a replacement costs you nothing out of pocket, spending $1,000 to prevent one is not an obvious win.
The honest counterweights:
- Comprehensive coverage is optional. Florida requires PIP and property damage liability, not comprehensive. Carry liability only and every windshield is fully out of pocket.
- Insurers control the glass. A no-deductible claim frequently means aftermarket glass, not OEM. On a car with a forward camera or a heads-up display, that can mean optical differences and a fussier calibration.
- Claim frequency is not free. Glass claims are typically not chargeable, but repeated claims can still factor into how a carrier treats a policy at renewal.
- Downtime and calibration risk. Every replacement is another calibration, and another chance for lane-keeping or automatic braking to come back slightly off.
What windshield protection film costs in Boca Raton in 2026
These are honest ranges for professional installation in Palm Beach County. Final pricing depends on windshield size, curvature, and sensor layout, and requires an in-person look at your specific glass.
Warranty is where the products genuinely differ, and it is worth reading before you buy. ExoShield's GT3+ carries a 3-year film warranty plus an extended glass protection warranty covering rock chip damage up to $1,000, with no mileage limit and transferable on sale. XPEL's windshield protection film carries 1 year or 12,000 miles against manufacturer defects such as peeling, cracking, yellowing, bubbling, hazing, and delamination. Those are very different propositions, so ask which product a quote is for. "Windshield film" is not one thing.

- Sedan: about $700 to $1,000.
- SUV or truck: about $850 to $1,300.
- Tesla Model 3 and Model Y: about $800 to $1,200.
- Model S and Model X: about $1,000 to $1,400, because the glass is larger and the curvature is more complex.
What WPF stops, and what it does not
What it handles well:
What it does not stop:
- Small rock chips at highway speed. Pea-sized gravel off a dump truck on I-95 or a construction trailer on the Turnpike is exactly what this film is engineered for.
- Sand and grit pitting. Years of fine abrasion is what turns a windshield hazy at night. Film takes that wear instead of the glass.
- Truck-tire spray. The constant low-energy peppering behind a semi in the rain on I-95.
- Thermal cracks. A crack from a temperature differential originates in the glass. Film is irrelevant.
- Edge and stress cracks. Cracks starting at the perimeter come from body flex or a bad install.
- Large debris. A brick at 70 mph will break the glass. Six times the impact resistance is not invulnerability.
- An existing chip. Film goes over damage, it does not repair it, and the chip can still spread underneath.
When WPF makes sense, and when to skip it
It makes sense if:
Skip it if:
- You commute I-95 or the Turnpike. Exposure is the whole variable. A daily Boca-to-Miami run is a different risk profile than errands around Mizner Park.
- You have a Tesla or German car with expensive OEM glass and ADAS. Keeping the factory windshield avoids both the aftermarket-glass compromise and repeat calibrations.
- You carry liability-only coverage. Without comprehensive, the zero-deductible rule does not help you and every windshield is out of pocket.
- Your car is new with intact factory glass, or it has a heads-up display or acoustic glass whose optical properties you want to keep exactly.
- Your windshield already has a chip. Sort the glass first, then film it.
- You carry comprehensive and are fine with insurer-supplied glass. Replacement is already free to you. This is the most common honest "no" we give.
- It is a low-mileage garage-kept weekend car, or you are returning a lease inside a year. Not enough exposure or runway to pay back.
How it is installed and what to expect after
The glass gets a full decontamination and polish first. Any residue, wiper film, or water spotting left under WPF is locked in and visible forever, because you look through it. Then the film is fitted and trimmed around the camera mount, the rain sensor housing, and the frit border. That trimming is the skilled part, and sloppy work around a sensor mount is where visual artifacts and lifting start.
Afterward, plan on a 48 to 72 hour care window. Leave the wipers off, avoid car washes, and expect possible slight haze or small moisture pockets that clear as the film cures. In Boca's humidity expect the longer end of that window. It is normal and it resolves.

Common concerns Boca drivers ask about
Will it distort my view or fog up? Properly installed WPF is optically clear and should be invisible in use, including at night. What causes complaints is contamination trapped underneath from poor prep, not the film itself. Bad prep on a windshield is far less forgivable than on a fender.
Will it interfere with rain sensors or a heads-up display? Generally no. The film is trimmed around the sensor housing and HUD projection still works. Tell the installer what systems your car has so fitment accounts for them.
What about wiper blades? Replace them as normal, and keep them clean. A torn blade dragging grit is one of the few things that can scuff the hardcoat. Never run wipers dry on a filmed windshield.
Our take at Auto SuperShield
Our take: WPF is a good product that gets sold to the wrong people. If you carry comprehensive insurance in Florida and you do not care whether the replacement glass is OEM, we will tell you to skip it, and we have told plenty of customers exactly that. The statute is doing the job you would be paying us to do.
Where it is genuinely worth the money is a newer ADAS-equipped car with factory glass you want to keep, especially a Tesla or a German car commuting the I-95 corridor daily. There you are not buying insurance against a $400 windshield. You are buying against repeat calibrations, aftermarket optical compromise, and downtime. Sitting behind a semi in an August downpour, that is an easy argument.
For a Tesla more broadly, Tesla paint protection and Tesla window tint usually deliver more value per dollar than glass film, and they pair with it well. For paint, start at our paint protection film page.
Frequently asked questions
Does windshield protection film really work?
Yes, for what it is designed to do. It spreads the energy of small impacts instead of letting it concentrate on one point of glass, and ExoShield claims roughly 6 times the impact resistance of bare glass. It reliably reduces small rock chips and long-term sand pitting. It will not stop large debris, thermal cracks, or stress cracks starting at the edge of the glass.
How long does windshield protection film last?
Typically two to four years in South Florida before clarity and hardcoat performance decline enough to warrant replacement, and heavy highway mileage plus UV at index 11 shortens that. Warranty terms vary a lot by product: ExoShield's GT3+ carries a 3-year film warranty, while XPEL's windshield film carries 1 year or 12,000 miles against defects. Ask which product you are being quoted.
Can I install windshield protection film myself?
DIY kits exist, but a windshield is the least forgiving surface on the car because you look through it every time you drive. Any trapped dust, crease, or misalignment around the camera mount sits permanently in your sightline, and glass prep has to be perfect because anything left underneath is sealed in. We would not recommend it.
Does WPF void the factory glass warranty?
Applying film to the outer surface does not normally affect factory glass coverage, since the glass itself is unmodified. Warranty language varies by manufacturer, so check your documentation or ask your dealer if it matters to you. Removal of a quality film within its service life should not damage the glass.
Can I combine WPF with ceramic window tint?
Yes, and it is a common pairing. WPF on the windshield handles impact, ceramic tint on the side and rear glass handles heat and UV. Any windshield tint has to comply with Florida law on visible light transmission. Have both quoted together so the installer sequences them correctly.
What is the difference between WPF and a windshield chip repair?
A chip repair is reactive: resin is injected into existing damage to stop it spreading. WPF is preventive: a film applied over undamaged glass to reduce chips happening at all. They are not alternatives, they are different stages. Film cannot fix an existing chip, and it should go on clean, undamaged glass, so if you already have a chip, address the glass first.
About the prices in this guide
Every figure in this guide is a ballpark for planning, not a quote. Prices for our own work start where they start and move with the vehicle, its paint or glass condition, and how much coverage you choose. Costs quoted for third-party work such as glass replacement or ADAS recalibration are general market ranges gathered for context, and those shops set their own prices, not us.
