The Ultimate Guide to Paint Protection in South Florida

Protecting the paint on a vehicle is difficult enough wherever you might live. But, in South Florida. multiple environmental factors conspire to degrade that beautiful façade.

Because of this, it’s essential to take some additional paint protection steps. The following discusses the choices you have and the pros and cons of each.

Why do I need additional paint protection in South Florida?

Why do we live in South Florida? Because it’s awesome! Gorgeous weather, amazing beaches, the ocean… These are just some of the reasons it’s one of the best places on the planet.

However, if you own a vehicle, the very draws of the area play havoc on the paintwork. The UV rays and salty air cause the factory-installed protective topcoat to rapidly break down. At first, this microscopic damage is invisible to the naked eye. But as the months roll by, the luster and shine begin to reduce, the color fades, and—eventually—the paintwork can begin to crack and peel.

Certain shades and colors begin to show this wear first. Those that are deeper along the color spectrum, such as black, deep blue, red, dark green, etc., will suffer from paint fade faster than lighter shades. But even white, gray, and other light paintwork will still be under attack.

Thankfully, there’s an easy way to prevent this: install high-quality paint protection on your vehicle. Cars, trucks, motorbikes, boats… Any type of vehicle will benefit from this valuable addition.

The different types of paint protection

There are different types of paint protection. All come in different qualities (and cost) and their effectiveness will also be determined by how well they’re installed.

The cheapest of all is regular car wax. However, wax is a temporary fix that needs to be repeated every few weeks. To correctly apply it, you should first deep clean the vehicle. After using a chamois to thoroughly dry the paintwork, you can then spend the best part of half a day applying and polishing the wax.

The pros of wax are its relatively cheap cost and that there’s no need for specialist installation. The cons are the time and effort it takes to apply, that it needs to be reapplied every few weeks, and that it provides no protection whatsoever from scratches or damage.

So, let’s take paint protection to another level with two outstanding products: paint protection film and ceramic coating:

  • Paint protection film (PPF): PPF can be applied to the complete vehicle or just to parts that are more subject to damage. For instance, the hood, wings, and fender. It provides a barrier between the paintwork and the elements, preventing wear from UV rays, salt, and other environmental damage. It also has what’s known as “self-healing” properties. This means that any small scratches or damage to the PPF can be treated with heat. This causes the material to magically morph back into its original form. Good quality PPF lasts anything from 5-7 years if looked after.
  • Ceramic coating: This uses nanotechnology to cover the vehicle in a thin, ultra-hard coating that not only protects from the elements but also makes the car gleam like nothing you’ve ever seen before. It’s also hydrophobic, making it easier to keep the paintwork clean. Ceramic coating has a similar lifespan to PPF.

Both PPF and ceramic coating are best installed professionally. The paintwork will need to be carefully prepped and both products should only be applied in a semi-sterile environment. Ceramic coating can also be applied over car wraps to provide a further layer of protection.
