All about Maserati paint protection film

Paint protection film (PPF) is a wholly transparent product that’s installed over the top of a vehicle’s paintwork. It can cover the whole car or just the areas that are more susceptible to damage, such as the hood, fenders, bumpers, wing mirror casings, and more.

Once in place, it’s totally invisible and provides a robust additional layer that protects the paint from the environment. The product was initially invented in the mid-20^th century as a protective cover for helicopter rotors. It’s been much refined since then and adapted for vehicle use.

Pros and cons

There are many advantages of fitting PPF to a Maserati—or, indeed, any other prestige vehicle. Of course, there’s always a flip side, so we also look at the disadvantages for a balanced view.

Pros:

• Protects against physical damage: PPF possesses a unique attribute, meaning that if it becomes damaged it can self-heal when heat is applied. Therefore, small stone chips or damage caused by other objects can be easily removed. As the damage occurs to the film, rather than the paintwork, so the paint remains unharmed.
• Protects against environmental damage: Including UV rays (the sun), bird droppings, acid rain, tree sap, etc. 
• Has hydrophobic properties: In other words, it repels water. This has two great advantages. The first is that when it rains or water splashes up at the car, it simply beads and runs away. You’ve probably seen this occur on a newly waxed car. However, PPF does this far more effectively, and it’s built into its makeup, meaning it never wears off. The second advantage is that this makes it easier to keep the car clean. Whilst it certainly doesn’t mean that you’ll never need to wash it again, you perhaps won’t need to do it so often.

In addition, you’ll never again have to dedicate endless dull hours to waxing your vehicle. This means you can do more of what you really enjoy—putting pedal to the metal and cruising the streets…

Cons:

• Has a finite lifespan: Depending on the quality and installation, PPF can last anything from 3-7 years. The best come with a good guarantee, usually around 5 years.
• It can’t stop major damage: For example, a huge rock strike or a massive scrape against something immovable. But then, you wouldn’t expect it to, would you…?
• It can become damaged: If, for instance, you didn’t clean off a big bird dropping or tree sap reasonably quickly. Much as if you left something like this on bare paintwork for days or weeks on end, you can expect the acids within to cause a rupture in the integrity and leave a mark.
• You need to install it over paintwork that’s in good condition: Meaning scrupulous paint correction needs to be done before PPF is applied. A failure to do so will only highlight the imperfections below.
