How Long Does it Take to Ceramic Coat a Vehicle?

August 29, 2024

Ceramic coating is certainly the paintwork product of the moment. But there’s a massive difference between a top-quality, professional installation and the DIY options that litter the shelves of Sears, O’Reilly’s, and AutoZone.

The latter will take you the best part of a day to apply. But, to be brutally honest, these are really nothing more than an upmarket wax.

If you care enough about your ride to want to protect the paintwork, then you’ve got to go for a professional install. And that takes anything from 2-3 days…

Ceramic Coatings: How, Why, and Where to Get It Done

Applying the ceramic coating is only a small part of the process. Indeed, the paintwork prep is what really counts. Get this wrong and—well, you might as well rip up a bunch of $50- and $100-dollar bills, just for the hell of it…

This is because ceramic coating seeps into every tiny area of paintwork before it cures. This means that the smallest scratch or paint anomaly will become way more noticeable if it’s not removed beforehand.

A high-end ceramic coating installation goes something like this.

  • Thoroughly wash every last inch of the vehicle: This is done more than once, getting into every crevice to remove every last speck of dirt.
  • Dry the vehicle: If any dirt remains, the wash and dry process will need to be repeated.
  • Move the vehicle to a semi-sterile location: A further wash and dry might take place here.
  • Clay bar the entire vehicle: An essential step that can’t be omitted. Once done, the car should be thoroughly wiped down and polished with unused microfiber cloths.
  • Carry out paintwork correction: This removes minor and major scratches, whorls, pitting, and any other issues.
  • Re-polish the car: To ensure there are no contaminants that will be forever sealed beneath the ceramic coating.
  • Apply the ceramic coating: Once in place, the detailer will pause for a few minutes before wiping down the entire paintwork. Then an advanced silica spray is applied.
  • Leave to cure: The vehicle must remain in the semi-sterile (preferably temperature-controlled) environment. It can take anything up to 48 hours to fully dry.

As you can see, this is a hugely detailed and time-consuming procedure. If any provider tells you they can install a ceramic coating in a shorter time scale, you should run for the hills! The same applies to those who say they can do it at your home or place of work. This is definitely not a semi-sterile environment.

Why invest in a ceramic coating?

Good ceramic coating is well worth the cost. It will:

  • Enhance the gloss and shine of the paintwork (plus there are special, less shiny finishes for matt paintwork).
  • Protect the factory paintwork from scratches and damage.
  • Help keep the paintwork cleaner for longer. This is thanks to having hydrophobic properties, meaning that water runs away from it. As it does, it holds onto contaminants, taking them along for the ride and helping keep the vehicle clean.
  • Protects the paintwork from acidic and chemical damage (bird droppings, acid rain, etc.).
  • Improves the resale value of the vehicle.
