Ceramic coating is perhaps the ultimate in car paintwork protection. It’s considered a valuable addition to a vehicle and can, if installed correctly and of good quality, considerably increase the resale value of a car.
But how does it work? And to what extent does it protect the factory paintwork? These, and other important questions, are answered below.
Ceramic coating uses nanotechnology to infuse the hardness of ceramic into a perfectly clear coating. This is applied to scrupulously clean factory paintwork, where it bonds to the surface to create an ultra-hard upper layer.
Not only does this protect the paint from environmental and physical damage, but it also makes the car gleam in a way that no amount of waxing and polishing could ever do. It really does have to be seen to be believed.
To install ceramic coating, the vehicle first has to be immaturely prepared. This means cleaning the whole surface to within an inch of its life. This is no normal shampoo—this entails all the usual efforts you’d expect from a top-end car valet, followed by a clay bar in a semi-sterile environment. Only once every possible contaminant has been removed can the ceramic coating be applied.
Failing to carry out this prep correctly will cause microscopic debris to be trapped below the coating—and trust us, this isn’t something that you want to happen.
The coating is then allowed to dry, bonding like a second skin to the surface below. After an appropriate drying time (up to 48 hours, depending on the surrounding environment) the vehicle is ready to return to the road. The invisible ceramic particles that now envelope the car prevent all the usual culprits of paintwork damage from reaching the layer below.
This means protection from:
Plus, the coating is also hydrophobic, making water and liquids bead on the surface and roll away. While this doesn’t mean you never need to wash your car again, it certainly does make the cleaning process a whole lot easier.
In a word, very! That is, as long as the product used is of high quality and that it’s installed correctly. Once in place, ceramic coating lasts for many years. The paintwork beneath remains pristine, which is why it’s such a sought-after addition for luxury, sports, and muscle cars.
