Georgia Tint Laws

Window tinting in the USA is regulated at state level. That means that every time you cross the state line, your vehicle’s tints are subjected to different legislation.

The following looks at the level of tint you’re legally allowed to apply to a vehicle in the state of Georgia.

Georgia Tint Laws Explained

  • What you can and can’t do in Georgia
  • Across the state line

What you can and can’t do in Georgia

Georgia window tint laws differ from the neighboring states of Tennessee, North Carolina, Alabama, and Florida. In Georgia, if you want to legally benefit from all the advantages of tinted windows, you have to adhere to the following:

Sedans and coupes

  • The windshield is allowed a top visor tint of 6” of any shade, as long as it’s non-reflective
  • Rear window: > 32% VLT darkness and < 20% reflection
  • Front and rear side windows: > 32% VLT darkness and < 20% reflection

Vans and SUVs

  • The windshield is allowed a top visor tint of 6” of any shade, as long as it’s non-reflective
  • Rear window: Any VLT darkness and < 20% reflection
  • Front side windows: > 32% VLT darkness and < 20% reflection
  • Rear side windows: Any VLT darkness and < 20% reflection

It’s worth being aware of some other Georgia-centric legalities. These are:

  • No red or amber tints are allowed
  • You’re not allowed to tint your tail lights past a certain degree. They must let a minimum of 70% light brightness be visible. However, tinting tail lights at all is bad practice, as it can be considered a safety risk.

It’s certainly worth staying within window tinting laws, as the fines for non-compliance are tough. Georgia law states:

“Violation of the law is a misdemeanor. It is punishable by a fine up to $1,000 or up to 12 months imprisonment.”

Across the state line

Of course, as soon as you cross into one of the bordering states, you’ll be subject to their individual laws. As this article is discussing the rules when in Georgia, we won’t go into full details of what can and can’t be done across the state line.

Suffice to say, if you have or are considering getting window tints to your vehicle and are likely to drive to other states, then you should adhere to the very strictest of them all. That way, you can rest assured that you’ll stay on the right side of the law and not be risking a fine or even incarceration.

Window Tints by State: trust the professionals

  • Always take professional advice

Always take professional advice

Window tint laws, the same as any other rules and regulations, are subject to change. The above requirements are correct in the state of Georgia as of September 2022. However, it’s always (always!) advisable that you consult with an expert provider before you take the plunge and have your vehicle’s windows tinted.

Sure, we all love the advantages that window tints bring:

  • Privacy
  • Protection from UV rays
  • Prevent the vehicle’s interior from fading
  • They look fab!

But all of these benefits will fade into nothing if you end up having to pay out for falling foul of the law. That’s why trusting a professional installer who’s up to date on your home state regulations and the surrounding ones is by far the best course of action to pimp up your ride.
