Florida Tint Laws

Tinting a car’s windows has several benefits. Not only does it look pretty cool, but in our sunny climate, it’s almost a must-have installation to make driving the pleasure that it should be.

Other reasons for getting tinted include:

Privacy for your passengers

Protection from UV rays

Preventing the interior fade

Making driving safer by reducing exterior glare

However, you can’t simply tint as and how you choose. Florida (and all states) has strict laws as to how this can be done. It’s essential to adhere to these, otherwise the fines can cost you big!

Read on for the latest 2022 window tint laws in the sunshine state.

Florida Tint Laws: all you need to know

  • Florida tint laws for sedans
  • Florida tint laws for SUVs and vans

Florida tint laws for sedans

Yep, you read these titles correctly. Florida does indeed have separate laws for certain types of vehicles. Each is very different, so it’s essential to understand and comply depending on the vehicle you have.

So, let’s first talk about sedans. Now, to understand window tint laws, you need to know that there are two elements to window tinting. These are the darkness and the reflection. The former is regarding the amount of light that’s allowed into the interior of the vehicle from the outside. This is called visible light transmission (VLT).

Window tint reflection is concerned with reflecting away incoming light, so reducing glare and heat.

Both the darkness and reflection values are expressed as percentages (%).

The following are the maximum allowed darkness and reflection values for individual sedan windows in Florida:

Darkness

  • Windshield: non-reflective tint is allowed above the manufacturer’s AS-1 line
  • Rear window: Must allow >15% of light through
  • Front side windows: Must allow >28% of light through
  • Rear side windows: Must allow >15% of light through

Reflection

  • Front side windows: No more than 25% reflection allowed
  • Rear side windows: No more than 35% reflection allowed

Florida tint laws for SUVs and vans

The laws for SUVs and vans are a little different, as follows:

Darkness

  • Windshield: non-reflective tint is allowed above the manufacturer’s AS-1 line
  • Rear window: Must allow >6% of light through
  • Front side windows: Must allow >28% of light through
  • Rear side windows: Must allow >6% of light through

Reflection

  • Front side windows: No more than 25% reflection allowed
  • Rear side windows: No more than 35% reflection allowed

In addition to the above, there are further rules and regulations in Florida that you should be aware of.

  • There are certain medical exemptions to the tinting laws. These should be confirmed with your physician, and you should carry signed documentation explaining this at all times when driving.
  • You’re required to display an official sticker stating that the tinting is legal. This should be placed on the inside of the driver’s door jamb.
  • If the back window is tinted, then the vehicle must have wing mirrors on both sides
  • Colored tint is not permitted.
  • And for obvious reasons, you’re not permitted to tint the front windshield (but we’re pretty sure we didn’t need to tell you that…)
