Don’t Buy Ceramic Coating Until You Read This!

The benefits of ceramic coating are many. Paint protection, easier cleaning, a second-to-none gleam… There are multiple reasons to splash out on an installation.

But… hang on a minute. Because ceramic coating is only a valuable addition if it’s done right. Done incorrectly, you run a very real risk of considerably devaluing your car.

The following discusses the dangers of ceramic coating and the vital elements you need to consider before installing it.

Ceramic Coating: the ugly truth

  • The dangers of ceramic coating #1
  • The dangers of ceramic coating #2
  • The dangers of ceramic coating #3

The dangers of ceramic coating #1

The first issue with ceramic coating arises from poor preparation. When the product is applied, it bonds tightly to the paintwork, seeping into any tiny crevice. This means that, if you don’t carry out the correct paint correction, the coating works like a magnifying glass, making any whirls or scratches stand out like the proverbial sore thumb.

If you’re not aware of how to carry out paintwork correction—or, indeed, if you don’t notice such areas, perhaps because of poor lighting when preparing the car—then you may well be in for a nasty surprise when your carefully applied ceramic coating dries….

The dangers of ceramic coating #2

The second issue is still to do with preparation. In the same way that the coating will exacerbate and seal in any paint anomalies, it will also make any dirt become a permanent part of the bodywork.

The process of cleaning the car prior to application is probably the most important element of an installation. It takes time—and, by that, we mean an awful lot of time… This is no regular deep clean, this takes cleaning to a whole new level. Firstly, any obvious dirt should be washed or gently sprayed away with cold water. This is followed by a double wash with gentle car shampoo to remove any remaining dirt.

And then…? Well, then the hard work starts.

After using a chamois and completely drying the paintwork, it’s time to clay bar. This laborious part of the prep cannot be rushed. Only after every last crevice has been clay barred to within an inch of its life (and the relevant paintwork correction has been carried out) is it time to begin to apply the ceramic coating.

Which brings us neatly to danger number 3…

The dangers of ceramic coating #3

…which is, location and curing.

The first is regarding where the process is carried out. This location should be as sterile as possible. In other words, a place where dust, grime, seeds, grit, sand, salt, or any other contaminant can’t come and settle on the car. If it does, you’ll not only seal it into the paintwork, but you run the risk of whatever it is creating minuscule scratches that will—as already mentioned—be magnified when the coating dries.

The curing process is something that must… Must… MUST… be allowed to happen slowly. The minimum time for a professional installation will be somewhere between 24-48 hours beneath infrared lights. Even once it’s dry and the vehicle can once again face the light of day, you shouldn’t wash the paintwork for at least 30 days. This is because it takes this long to wholly cure and bond to the bodywork.

All of these reasons are why you should choose your ceramic coating service with care. Not only should they use advanced products, but the installer should know the correct way to prep the vehicle and have the right environment in which to do so.

If you’re in any doubt at all about a potential supplier’s credentials, then find someone else. Ceramic coating done right is a valuable upgrade to a vehicle. Done wrong it can massively devalue the car and cost a fortune to rectify. So, it pays to do your homework to ensure the results you crave...
