The short answer. Wash a ceramic coated car every week or two with a pH-neutral shampoo, dry it properly, top it with a ceramic booster every few months, and bring it back to your installer once a year. That annual visit is not optional on an XPEL Fusion Plus coating: XPEL requires it to keep the warranty active. In South Florida, where UV, salt air, and love bugs all work on the coating at once, the routine is what decides whether a coating lasts its full term or quits early.
What ceramic coating actually is
A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that bonds to your clear coat and cures into a thin, hard, slick layer. It makes the paint hydrophobic, so water beads and rolls off, and it resists UV, chemical stains, and contamination while adding gloss. What it does not do is stop rock chips or deep scratches. That is the job of paint protection film.
You will see "9H hardness" on nearly every coating label. That refers to the pencil hardness test, which measures resistance to scratching from graded pencil leads. It is not the Mohs mineral scale, and a 9H coating is not as hard as sapphire. It is a useful number for comparing coatings, not a promise of scratch-proof paint.
At our Boca Raton shop we install XPEL Fusion Plus. The ceramic coating ladder runs from Fusion Plus Lite, backed by a one-year warranty, to Fusion Plus with a four-year warranty, to Fusion Plus Premium with an eight-year warranty.
Why Florida ages ceramic faster
The pattern: none of these destroy a coating on day one. They load it up. A coating clogged with mineral deposits, fallout, and pollen stops beading and starts to look dead, even when the coating itself is still there underneath.
- UV. Boca summer UV sits in the EPA's very high to extreme range for months. UV is the slow, constant load on any coating's top layer.
- Salt aerosol. Park east of Federal Highway or drive A1A regularly and there is salt on the car every day. It dries into a film that dulls the surface and clings to the coating.
- Love bugs. Florida gets two big love bug flights a year, in spring and again in late summer. UF/IFAS notes that residue left on a car for several days turns more acidic as bacteria break it down. Coating buys you time, not immunity.
- Afternoon storms and hard water. June through September, a daily storm followed by sun bakes mineral-heavy water onto the car. Irrigation overspray from sprinklers does the same thing.
- Pollen. March and April leave a yellow film on every car in Palm Beach County, and it clogs a coating's beading until it is washed off.
- Heat. A dark car in an open lot in August gets hot enough to bake every one of those contaminants onto the surface.
Your weekly ceramic coating wash
XPEL's own care guidance for Fusion Plus recommends a weekly wash. If the car lives in a garage and sees light use, every two weeks is fine. This is the routine we give our customers:
If your HOA restricts hose washing, a rinseless wash is the workaround. XPEL recommends its Rinse Free Car Wash as the weekly wash for Fusion Plus. Use plenty of solution and several towels, and fold each towel to a clean side often. On a car caked in dried love bugs or storm grime, though, rinseless is not enough. Soak the residue first or take the car somewhere with a hose.
Skip the brush car wash. Tunnel brushes drag grit across the surface, which puts swirls into the coating and the paint beneath it. If you must use an automatic wash, touchless is the lesser evil.
Quarterly boosters and decontamination
Every few months, add a ceramic booster spray after a wash. XPEL's line includes Ceramic Boost for this. A booster is a light, slick top layer that restores beading and takes the day-to-day abuse so the base coating does not have to. It does not replace the coating, and it will not revive one that has failed.
Two or three times a year, and always after love bug season, the car needs a deeper clean. That means an iron remover to dissolve embedded brake dust and rail dust, and a clay treatment on any panel that still feels rough after washing. Use products labeled safe for coatings, and if you are not sure, let us do it.
The annual maintenance visit
XPEL's care instructions for Fusion Plus say you must visit your certified installer annually for the length of the warranty. Skip it and you risk the warranty.

Our take: book the annual visit for early December, once hurricane season closes on November 30 and the fall love bug flight is long gone. That clears a summer's worth of salt, storm grime, and bug residue before the winter season and resets the coating for spring pollen.
Signs your ceramic coating is aging out
Before assuming the coating is gone, decontaminate. A clogged coating and a failed coating look the same until the surface is truly clean. If it still sheets water after that, it is time for a professional look.
- Water sheets instead of beading even after a proper wash and decontamination.
- The paint feels grabby under a clean microfiber instead of slick.
- Water spots that will not wash off.
- Pollen and bug residue sticking harder than it did the first year.
How long a coating should last, honestly
Go by the warranty term the manufacturer publishes, and treat it as the ceiling for a well-maintained car rather than the floor. For XPEL, that is one year for Fusion Plus Lite, four years for Fusion Plus, and eight years for Fusion Plus Premium. Consumer spray sealants from a store shelf last a fraction of that, and nothing lasts its full term in Florida without the washing and annual visits above.
Caring for a fresh coating
XPEL says Fusion Plus usually cures in three to four hours before the car is ready for the road, but the coating keeps hardening for a while after that. Follow the first-wash window on the aftercare card you get at pickup. In the first weeks, avoid parking under sprinklers or trees if you can, and remove bird droppings and bugs promptly with a gentle rinse.
Keep these out of the garage: dish soap, ammonia-based glass cleaners that can overspray onto paint, and silicone-heavy dressings. Traditional carnauba wax is not needed on a coated car either.
Ceramic maintenance if you also have PPF
Ceramic goes on top of film, not instead of it. Film absorbs the impacts, and coating handles the chemistry. XPEL's care guide for its Ultimate Plus, Ultimate Fusion, and Stealth films recommends sealing them with Ceramic Boost at least every six months, and adds one extra rule: keep pressure washer spray away from film edges.
If your film is XPEL Ultimate Fusion, the hydrophobic layer is already built into the film, so those panels do not need a separate coating. Wash the whole car the same way.
