Can I Use Paint Protection Services on My Boat?

December 30, 2024

Can I use paint protection services on my boat? Sure, you can—and it’s a great way to protect her beautiful façade from harsh UV rays and salt—plus there are a bunch of other advantages that you probably didn’t even know about.

There are three main options. So, let’s take a look at them each in more detail.

Paint Protection Options for Boats

  • Option 1: wax
  • Option 2: paint protection film (a clear bra)
  • Option 3: ceramic coating

Option 1: wax

There are plenty of waxes on the market that provide a level of paint protection. Boat owners will be very familiar with these. In the past, this was the only choice for marine paint protection. They’re cheap and take a huge amount of work to apply. It also needs to be re-applied regularly.

Wax is the least efficient of the three options for protecting against UV rays and salt damage—especially if it’s not renewed every few weeks.

Option 2: paint protection film (a clear bra)

Paint protection film—also known as PPF or clear bra—is a clear, thin film that adds an invisible, protective surface layer. It’s highly efficient against UV rays and prevents salt, bird droppings, oil, and other damaging substances from coming into contact with the surface of the boat.

You can install it over the entirety of the vessel or just in specific areas, including:

  • On the hull.
  • Over walkways and high-traffic areas.
  • On handrails.
  • Over glossy wooden features.
  • Areas prone to damage, such as the fender line.

PPF is self-healing, meaning that if any minor damage occurs, you can mend it by applying a little heat. Doing this means it’ll magically transform back to its original form. It also makes general cleaning easier, only requiring a wipe over with a damp cloth.

Option 3: ceramic coating

Now we’re talking…! Ceramic coating is by far the best choice for paint protection on a boat. Before we delve into it, let’s make it clear that we’re talking professional ceramic coatings, not the DIY options that are widely available (these are little more than a glorified wax and really not worth the effort or the money).

OK, so ceramic coating uses what’s called “nanotechnology”, which basically means that it contains thousands of teeny pieces of ceramic (yep, the clue is in the name). This, my proud boat owner, means that when you install it, they catch the light and reflect it outwards. This creates a shine that will make your heart weep, it’s so gorgeous to see…

Right, back to the practicalities. Ceramic coating on a boat offers the following:

  • It provides a total barrier to UV rays and anything else that causes surface damage. Top-quality, correctly applied ceramic coating lasts for years and significantly increases the value of your boat.
  • It makes your boat easier to clean: Ceramic coating is extremely hydrophobic, meaning it repels water. All you need do is throw a bucket of water over the surface and watch it form into beads that run away. As it does this, it takes dust and debris with it—give it a quick polish with a microfiber cloth, and voila! The cleaning is done…
  • It prevents drag: The hydrophobic properties reduce friction and resistance as the boat cuts through the water.
  • It reduces damage against knocks and scrapes: Minor damage doesn’t reach the paintwork, increasing the resale value should you want to change or upgrade in the future.

If you like, you can even combine PPF and ceramic coating together, for the ultimate boat protection.
