Weather and environmental conditions can have a significant effect on a vehicle’s looks. Whether it’s UV rays, acid rain, salt, or damage from flying debris whipped up by the wind, there are plenty of ways that weather can impact car paint.
Thankfully, there’s also quite a lot you can do to minimize damage—and the sooner it’s done, the better.
The weather has a lot to answer for when it comes to vehicle paintwork. There are chemical attacks, such as the salty ocean environment and tree sap, as well as the omnipresent sunshine that leeches color from paint year-round. And don’t even get us started on hurricane damage…
The worst offenders are the UV rays. These will, without proper paintwork protection, soon cause even the most fastidiously waxed surface to fade. Aside from protecting your ride from the sunshine when not in use (using a garage or carport), the only way to prevent this is to add some permanent paintwork protection.
Before you ask, no—this isn’t automatically added during car production (although with some of the eye-wateringly high prices for many luxury cars, we’d argue that it should be—but that’s another subject…).
This means that the sooner you take action, the better. If you’ve got a new or nearly new vehicle, or one that’s been resprayed or wrapped, then paint protection isn’t something that can be put off.
There are three options for paintwork protection:
All of these provide a robust barrier between weather conditions and the paintwork.
Adding PPF involves applying a clear, thermoplastic polyurethane film to each section of the car. Not only does this prevent UV rays and chemical attacks from reaching the paintwork, but the better-quality ones have a self-healing function. This means that, in the case of minor film damage, applying a little heat will see it meld back to its original form. PPF is also mildly hydrophobic, helping water run away from the surface and taking dirt and debris with it in the process.
Ceramic coating adds a super-hard, permanent layer to the paintwork. This contains tiny ceramic particles that catch and reflect the light. The effect of this is an incredible sheen (or deep matte, depending on the desired effect) that enhances the gleam of the paintwork like nothing else can.
The coating also:
The ultimate protection is to use both together. The PPF is applied first, with the ceramic coating going on top. This gives all the advantages of both products, protecting the paintwork from weather conditions, enhancing the look, reducing cleaning and paintwork maintenance, as well as increasing the resale value of the vehicle.
